TCU's College of Education offers an Ed.D in educational leadership. There are two options to the Educational Leadership Program.  See program options below.

Mission

The mission of both programs is to prepare students to assume major leadership positions in a wide variety of education-related organizations by applying managerial skills and educational leadership in the field of education. The program is designed to prepare students to enter educational management in school systems, regional, state, or federal governments, research institutions, private foundations, universities or private sector companies.

Objectives

To provide students the background necessary to complete superintendent certification in Texas. Superintendent certification requires understanding of leadership in the educational, instructional, and administrative communities;

  • To develop leaders who understand the operations and leadership of organizations;
  • To develop leaders prepared to take advantage of increasing opportunities for creating new educational institutions and systems;
  • To develop educational leaders who operate with a global perspective in a diverse and rapidly evolving professional field;
  • To develop educational leaders who operate with clear-cut ethical and moral commitments for the education of all children;
  • To develop educational leaders able to envision and create new settings now possible through the availability of information technologies.

Program Options

Option I: Together with the M. J. Neeley School of Business, the College of Education has created a unique option consisting of a comprehensive program that integrates a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.), effectively combining the best of the business and educational disciplines.

Option II: For students already holding a master’s degree, the College of Education offers the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership providing the same high-quality preparation in education as the joint program but without the MBA. (HL to the Ed.D. program description)

Advisory Committee

The Doctoral Advisory Committee assists the student in planning the completion of the program of study and in preparing for non-course work requirements such as the comprehensive examination experience and the dissertation.  The committee membership should be decided as soon as possible, but not later than the accrual of 27 semester hours.  The Doctoral Advisory Committee consists of a minimum of three members.  The major advisor who serves as chair of the Doctoral Advisory Committee is a fulltime, tenure-track member of the College of Education faculty with graduate faculty status. The Director of Graduate Studies of the College of Education will approve committee membership and changes in that membership.

The Comprehensive Examination Experience

The comprehensive examination experience requires students to demonstrate their ability to critically construct and discuss theory, research, and practice in educational leadership.  The comprehensive examination experience consists of the completion of a comprehensive review of the literature of an area relevant to the student’s degree and career plans.  The student’s Doctoral Advisory Committee must approve the topic for this review.

All committee members will read and give feedback to the student on this written product.  When all committee members are satisfied with the quality of this product, after their final revision, an oral examination will be scheduled within three weeks.  The oral examination is over only the topics covered in the written product and ensures that students can present as well as construct their concepts in educational leadership.  The student’s committee will determine by consensus if he or she passed or failed the examination.  The committee decides if the student can retake the oral examination at a later time.

Advancement to Candidacy

The Dissertation Advisory Committee recommends to the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies of the College of Education that the student be admitted to candidacy for the Ed. D. degree when the student has completed all requirements for the degree except the dissertation. This includes satisfactory completion of all course work required in the program of study, fulfillment of the residency requirement, successful completion of the comprehensive examination experience, and the approval of the dissertation prospectus.

The Dissertation Prospectus

The Ed.D. Doctoral dissertation is the cumulative experience that documents what the student has learned during the degree and allows the student to project their ideas for leadership in their chosen career.  A number of creative, scholarly formats are allowed for the dissertation for the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. The Doctoral Advisory Committee and the student are provided considerable flexibility on the format and content of the dissertation.  Some students whose career path is projected toward the academy may work with their committee to choose the traditional format of research-based inquiry. Other students whose career path is projected toward the practice of leadership I any number of settings may work with their committee on a format that documents their progress through a scholarly dialog or project based experience.  Still other students may seek their own unique format under the guidance and approval of the committee.
