Assistant Principal Academy

The Assistant Principal Academy focuses on developing leadership traits which encompass the following objectives:

  • Helping the participants evaluate and understand their leadership style
  • Helping the participants develop the skills needed to be successful in “real” academic urban schools
  • Providing opportunities for the participants to read, discuss, and understand “Best Urban School Practices”
  • Highlighting successful urban schools and providing opportunities for campus visits
  • Providing opportunities for the participants to attend symposiums, workshops, conferences, and other events where they can hear and interact with teachers and school leaders in the field of Urban Education

Participants are taught how to create a vision, make good decisions, balance work with social activities, respect the local culture, and use data for academic improvement.  The overall goal of the Academy is to ensure that participants will develop the skills they will need to lead urban schools that are child-centered and data-driven, where new ideas are encouraged and where learning is a continuous process for students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

The Assistant Principal’s Academy supports assistant principals who are currently working in urban schools. While school principals generally receive leadership development opportunities and other administrative support from their districts, such opportunities are generally not offered to assistant principals who are being trained on the job and have aspirations of becoming principals themselves.

The overall goal of the Academy is to ensure that participants will develop the skills they need to lead urban schools that are child-centered and data-driven, where new ideas are encouraged and where learning is a continuous process for all stakeholders.  The goal ties in directly with the university’s mission to educate individuals to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in the global community.
